Productivity

Coding

Video and graphics

System and file repair

  • sudo fsck -f /dev/sdXN
  • sudo dnf distro-sync
  • sudo rpm --rebuilddb
  • sudo kill -9 $(pgrep program)

fsck must run on an unmounted partition, never on the active root filesystem while the system is running.

Network and connectivity

  • sudo resolvectl flush-caches
  • sudo systemctl restart NetworkManager
  • ping google.com

System information

  • hostnamectl
  • sudo dmidecode -s system-serial-number

Advanced tools

  • sudo dnf autoremove && sudo dnf clean all
  • sudo dnf offline-upgrade clean
  • sudo systemctl restart dnf5daemon-server
  • sudo pkcon refresh force
  • sudo reboot

Application administration

Clear terminal history

  • cat /dev/null > ~/.bash_history && history -c && exit

Clear GNOME Software and DNF caches

  • flatpak uninstall --unused
  • flatpak repair
  • flatpak update --appstream
  • flatpak pin --remove <runtime-id>
  • flatpak pin
  • sudo rm -rf /var/cache/PackageKit/*
  • rm -rf ~/.cache/*
  • rm -fr ~/.cache/gnome-software
  • sudo rm -fr /var/cache/dnf/*
  • sudo dnf makecache
  • sudo pkcon refresh force
  • sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
  • sudo dnf update
  • sudo dnf upgrade --best --allowerasing
  • flatpak update -y
  • sudo dnf upgrade --refresh && flatpak update -y

Clearing cache folders forces some apps to rebuild indexes or thumbnails on next launch. This is not harmful to data, only slightly slower on first use.

Firewall

Fedora uses firewalld by default.

  • sudo firewall-cmd --state
  • sudo firewall-cmd --add-service=http --permanent
  • sudo firewall-cmd --reload
  • sudo firewall-cmd --list-all

Copying files via terminal

  • cp file.txt ~/Backup/
  • rsync -av Source/ Destination/
  • scp file.txt user@host:/path/

Disk usage and storage

  • df -h for total and free space per filesystem
  • du -sh * to see folder sizes in the current directory

Scheduled tasks

  • crontab -e for traditional cron-style scheduling
  • systemctl list-timers to view active systemd timers

Compression and archiving

  • zip -r archive.zip folder/ and unzip archive.zip
  • tar -czvf archive.tar.gz folder/ and tar -xzvf archive.tar.gz

History

  • 1993

Marc Ewing creates his own Linux distribution while at Carnegie Mellon, nicknamed "Red Hat Linux" after a red cap he wore; the same year Bob Young founds ACC Corp, selling Linux software and accessories.

  • 1995

Young and Ewing merge their companies into Red Hat Software, and Red Hat Linux 1.0 ships.

  • 2002

Warren Togami starts the volunteer-run Fedora Linux project as a repository of extra packages for Red Hat Linux.

  • 2003

Red Hat discontinues its consumer Red Hat Linux line and merges it with the Fedora Linux project to form the community-driven Fedora Project. Fedora Core 1 ships on 6 November as the first official release.

  • 2007

Fedora 7 drops "Core" from the name, merging the Core and Extras repositories into a single, unified Fedora.

  • 2014

The Fedora.next initiative reorganizes the distribution into Workstation, Server, and Cloud editions built from a shared base.

  • Today

Fedora remains Red Hat's upstream testbed for new technology, shipping GNOME, systemd, Wayland, and PipeWire early before they land in Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
